My mother was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in her left breast last friday. As I type, I am in the waiting room at HealthPark - she is being wheeled into recovery from a double mastectomy and we are waiting for the word on when we can go see her. I think the awareness you are raising is a beautiful thing, and I thank you. Go team PINK! ♥Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-31448514758631702542010-10-11T07:20:12.302-07:002010-10-11T07:20:12.302-07:00Jess Richards
Hey....breast cancer took someone ...Jess Richards

Hey....breast cancer took someone very dear to me about 6yrs ago....but one of the greatest honors of my life was to belong to a breast cancer awareness group called "viva las chicas" in St Pete. I was chosen to sing the National Anthem @ a Susan G Komen race for the cure in 2004 in front of 15,000 ppl. To watch a sea of people silently bonded for the cause walking, inspiring, reaching, praying, affecting change is an image I will never forget! To walk and sing in memory of this loved one is a once in a lifetime experience! Cancer sucks as it has taken 4 family members just this year alone, however I still trust in a God that is bigger than the disease. I am still praying for a cure! Thanks for letting me share my story.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-53244226817466555032010-10-06T19:23:59.845-07:002010-10-06T19:23:59.845-07:00Breast Cancer has no bounds. I had my children before 30, never took birth control or hormone replacement and I don't consume alcohol... Yet I was diagnosed with an Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma Grade III - this is an aggressive cancer. I found mine on a self breast exam - so yes they are worth the time - it could save your life!Angela Menendeznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-52113037187156984712010-10-03T20:15:15.037-07:002010-10-03T20:15:15.037-07:00"Today, approximately 1 in almost every 8 wom..."Today, approximately 1 in almost every 8 women (13.4%) will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer -- and is the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 35 to 54. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009, approximately 192,370 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and approximately 40,610 will die. Although these numbers may sound frightening, research reveals that the mortality rate could decrease by 30% if all women age 50 and older who need a mammogram had one.

Only 5% to 10% of breast cancers occur in women with a clearly defined genetic predisposition for the disease. She is a survivor but will not be considered cancer free until 5 years of clean reports!! I also have a very close friend who is only 24 years old that has endured an extremely hard few months. Learning you have breast cancer and have to have a complete mastectomy at age 24 is just heart wrenching!!! Become familiar with the risk to help reduce your chances of getting this terrible disease!

Over the course of a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Risk factors you cannot change include:

* Age and gender -- Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. The majority of advanced breast cancer cases are found in women over age 50. Women are 100 times more likely to get breast cancer then men.
* Family history of breast cancer -- You may also have a higher risk for breast cancer if you have a close relative who has had breast, uterine, ovarian, or colon cancer. About 20 - 30% of women with breast cancer have a family history of the disease.
* Genes -- Some people have genes that make them more prone to developing breast cancer. The most common gene defects are found in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes normally produce proteins that protect you from cancer. But if a parent passes you a defective gene, you have an increased risk for breast cancer. Women with one of these defects have up to an 80% chance of getting breast cancer sometime during their life.
* Menstrual cycle -- Women who get their periods early (before age 12) or went through menopause late (after age 55) have an increased risk for breast cancer.

Other risk factors include:

* Alcohol use -- Drinking more than 1 - 2 glasses of alcohol a day may increase your risk for breast cancer.
* Childbirth -- Women who have never had children or who had them only after age 30 have an increased risk for breast cancer. Being pregnant more than once or becoming pregnant at an early age reduces your risk of breast cancer.
* DES -- Women who took diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriage may have an increased risk of breast cancer after age 40. This drug was given to the women in the 1940s - 1960s.
* Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) -- You have a higher risk for breast cancer if you have received hormone replacement therapy for several years or more. Many women take HRT to reduce the symptoms of menopause.
* Obesity -- Obesity has been linked to breast cancer, although this link is controversial. The theory is that obese women produce more estrogen, which can fuel the development of breast cancer.
* Radiation -- If you received radiation therapy as a child or young adult to treat cancer of the chest area, you have a significantly higher risk for developing breast cancer. The younger you started such radiation, the higher your risk -- especially if the radiation was given when a female was developing breasts.

Breast implants, using antiperspirants, and wearing underwire bras do not raise your risk for breast cancer. There is no evidence of a direct link between breast cancer and pesticides.Nichole Coynenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-62645734376603420452010-10-03T15:24:34.450-07:002010-10-03T15:24:34.450-07:00I'm also a follower of the blog! :)I'm also a follower of the blog! :)Nichole Coynenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-12638870460592531992010-10-03T15:24:15.449-07:002010-10-03T15:24:15.449-07:00Of course I'm a fan!! :) <3 you!!!!Of course I'm a fan!! :) <3 you!!!!Nichole Coynenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-18662690680704270382010-10-01T15:51:14.882-07:002010-10-01T15:51:14.882-07:00Found this online and thought it was interesting:
...Found this online and thought it was interesting:

"Breast cancer is not a single disease. There are many types of breast cancer, and they may have vastly different implications. Breast cancers range from localized cancers such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) to invasive cancers that can rapidly spread (metastasize). In the middle of the spectrum are breast cancers, such as colloid carcinomas and papillary carcinomas, which have a much more favorable outlook (prognosis) than the other more typically invasive breast cancers. Sometimes, noninvasive DCIS is found around invasive breast cancers."

- Medicinenet.comBrenda Martinezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10883064687619589421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-19291284757169490972010-10-01T15:49:30.805-07:002010-10-01T15:49:30.805-07:00Follwer!Follwer!Brenda Martinezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10883064687619589421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196925119538804588.post-12239601378314369542010-10-01T15:45:50.863-07:002010-10-01T15:45:50.863-07:00FANFANBrenda Martineznoreply@blogger.com
